Dental Work
Since dental disease is one of the most commonly diagnosed problems in our dogs and cats we have the facilities to perform dental cleanings and extractions. This is done under a general anesthesia to allow us to thoroughly clean all surfaces above and below the gum line as well as polish the teeth. Anesthesia is also the only way for us to be able to accurately assess each tooth and dental x-rays can also be done to help with this assessment. Surgery and Anesthesia
The Animal Care Centre performs a variety of elective (spays and neuters) and non-elective surgeries (such as lump removals). We have a dedicated surgery suite so it is able to be kept as clean as possible for sterile surgeries and to lessen chances of complications such as infections. Surgical preparation for surgeries involves shaving off your pet’s hair and then doing multiple scrubs to clean the area and this is done in our treatment area (outside of surgery). General anesthesia involves not only the anesthetic machine itself but also endotracheal tubes to place in your pet’s windpipe to maintain the anesthesia. We monitor your pet carefully under anesthesia to keep your pet as safe as possible and to ensure a smooth and rapid recovery. We measure respiration (breathing), pulse, blood pressure, temperature and oxygen in their blood and chart these every five minutes. Sometimes we need more information about your pet and x-rays can give us a look inside. We can find such conditions such as fractures, arthritis, bladder stones, an enlarged heart or fluid in the lungs with radiology. Most times we can do this in one visit and without anesthesia. In-House Laboratory
Our in-house laboratory allows us to get results about your pet’s condition quickly and accurately. Our Registered Veterinary Technologists are trained to use our blood machines, microscopes and how to interpret what they see under them. Our blood machines measure such parameters as white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, liver, kidneys and blood sugar (among others). This can help to diagnose and treat your pet if he or she is ill or to be sure they are healthy (or to keep them healthy) while they are under general anesthesia. It can also be a part of your senior wellness appointment to be sure your older cat or dog is not hiding any diseases as they age. We also perform urinalyses to give us information on such conditions as urinary tract infections or kidney disease. Unlike your human doctor, we can dispense most medications your pet may need directly to you after your pet’s appointment or surgery. We carry such medications as antibiotics, various pain medications, ear medications and treatments for such conditions as vomiting or diarrhea. We also carry a line of nutraceuticals to help with such diseases as arthritis, stress and liver disease.
